J.J. Mechi Games Compendium

Jon's main chess page

A games compendium manufactured and sold by J.J. Mechi, a well-known merchant in Victorian London. Mechi was also the founder of the Royal Agricultural Beneficial Institution.

The chess set is a Staunton pattern bone set, kings 2.35 inches. The compendium can be dated to the 1870's, partly due to the address (112 Regent street) and partly because his earlier items at that address were labeled Mechi & Bazin. Bazin died in 1865 but the company traded under that name until 1869. (Thanks to my friend Helen Murphy, the top Mechi researcher, for this information.)
