Dieppe Green and White Figural Ivory Set, probably early 19th century |

Dieppe was well-known for its meticulously carved ivory figural chess sets. This set is an excellent example of the excellent carving. Note the Bishops with their strange expressions -- in prior centuries, the Bishops were "fou" (fool) or court jesters. My Picasa album with photos of this set is here: https://picasaweb.google.com/JonCrumiller/FrenchDieppeWhiteAndGreenIvorySet
