Dieppe Green and White Figural Ivory Set, late 18th century or early 19th century

Dieppe was well-known for its meticulously carved ivory figural chess sets. This set is an excellent example of the excellent carving. Note the Bishops with their strange expressions -- in prior centuries, the Bishops were "fou" (fool) or court jesters.
