A Jaques Staunton set from 1849, the first year of manufacture. Dating is straightforward due to the British registration lozenges on the bottoms of most of the pieces. It is rare for these sets to still have the registration lozenges. The White King is stamped "J. Jaques London" which also indicates a date of 1849. Likewise the Knights are Cooke-style knights. Kings are 3.5". The Bishops' mitres are in the process of being restored by Alan Dewey, a master craftsman in the U.K. |
