Staunton Handwritten Letter - 1867

I have been very fortunate to acquire an amazing and ironic handwritten letter by Howard Staunton.

Staunton, one of the towering egos of his day, displayed his supreme immodesty - as well as supreme false modesty - in this handwritten letter. Staunton states that his signature will be of no value to a collector of autographs - but please take note of the preprinted heading: CHESS CHAMPION

No surprise there! But in all fairness, Staunton was probably the world's strongest player in the 1840's before Paul Morphy stormed his way to the top of the chess world.
